SUICIDE INTERVENTION/SELF-HARM TRAINING

In the world it is estimated that one million people die annually by suicide. That represents one death every 40 seconds. In Canada the suicide rate is 15 per 100,000 and is the second leading cause of death for Canadians between the ages of 10 and 24.

The Suicide Intervention/Self-Harm Training workshop is a full day course intended to teach participants about the issues surrounding suicide and self-harm and help participants understand some of the reasons people consider suicide and reasons why others would engage in self-harm. This workshop is for professionals (teachers, educational assistants, social workers, child and youth care staff, etc.) as well as individuals who are interested in learning more about suicide and self-harm. The workshop will help participants to enhance their ability to identify the situation, report to the proper authorities and support the individual until a trained professional can assess the situation. The focus is to communicate with the person who is at risk of suicide or is engaging in self-harm and understand some of the reasons they may be displaying this behaviour.

Please note that the training is not intended to teach anyone how to clinically assess risk in any situation. The information provided is intended to provide background for participants and is not a replacement for proper clinical training. This training is also required for CAC Accreditation but you are not required to take it through CAC to meet the requirement.

The topics that are covered in this workshop are:

To recognize that persons at risk are affected by personal and societal attitudes about suicide.
To identify factors that indicate the risk of suicide.
To understand how to discuss suicide with a person at risk.
To demonstrate the skills requires intervening with a person at risk of suicide.
To identify the resources available to a person at risk of suicide.
To gain commitment to help coordinate social support resources and gain professional help for persons at risk of suicide.
To understand self-harm.
To understand the meaning and purpose of self-harm.
To understand the reasons and issues that are often behind self-harm.
To help support someone who is engaging in self-harm.
To understand the needs of someone engaging in self-harm.
To develop a range of strategies to help the participant respond appropriately to a disclosure of self-harm.
