SUICIDE AWARENESS TRAINING

The Suicide Awareness Training Program serves a number of purposes. This program is for people interested in learning more about suicide and what can be done to help those at risk. It provides basic information about the signs of suicide along with the initial steps to help the person in need. The program will also inform participants of the networks available in the community.

Every community needs people who support suicide awareness, as well as caregivers who are prepared to intervene. This workshop is intended to be taken by professionals (teachers, educational assistants, social workers, foster parents, child and youth care staff, etc.) as well as individuals who are interested in learning more about suicide. The focus is to understand the reasons a person may be considering this course of action as well as where to find help if the need arises.

Please note that the training is not intended to teach anyone how to clinically assess risk in any situation. The information provided is intended to provide background for participants and is not a replacement for proper clinical training. This training is also required for CAC Accreditation but you are not required to take it through CAC to meet the requirement.

The topics that are covered in this workshop include:

Becoming aware of suicide ideation.
Understanding the point of view who may be considering suicide.
To recognize that persons at risk are affected by personal and societal attitudes about suicide.
To identify factors that indicate the risk of suicide.
How to react to a person who has confided their desire to commit suicide to you.
To identify the resources available to a person at risk of suicide.
