SELF-HARM TRAINING

The Self-Harm Training workshop is a 1/2 day course intended to teach participants about the issues surrounding self-harm and help participants understand some of the reasons people exhibit this behaviour. This workshop is for professionals (teachers, educational assistants, social workers, child and youth care staff, etc.) as well as individuals who are interested in learning more about Self-Harm. The workshop will help participants to enhance their ability to identify the situation, report to the proper authorities and support the individual until a trained professional can assess the situation. The focus is to communicate with the person who is Self-Harming and understand some of the reasons they may be doing this.

Please note that the training is not intended to teach anyone how to clinically assess risk in any situation. The information provided is intended to provide background for participants and is not a replacement for proper clinical training. This training is also required for CAC Accreditation but you are not required to take it through CAC to meet the requirement.

The topics that are covered in this workshop are:

What is Self-Harm?
What is the meaning and purpose of Self-Harm?
What are the reasons and issues that are often behind Self-Harm?
How do you support someone who is engaging in Self-Harm?
What are the needs of someone engaging in Self-Harm?
Developing a range of strategies to help the participant respond appropriately to a disclosure of Self-Harm.
